Feeling supersonic? What’s next for air travel

New York to London in 3 hours and 15 minutes. This is the kind of speed Boom’s Supersonic airliner promises. It’s a prospect that’s got the industry hyped up: Virgin and Japan Airlines have already got their pre-orders in – and the demonstrator model hasn’t even been built yet. Is it worth it? We think so.

Hello, world!

Supersonic won’t deal with the immigration queue at the other end. But it will reduce the tiring but necessary length of time it takes to get to your destination, by cutting it almost in half. Suddenly, even the furthest flight – like the current 15-hour San Francisco to Sydney journey – is manageable. Right now, it looks like the cost will be equivalent to a Business Class flight. A little pricey for many. But if you’re travelling to the other side of the world, the expense seems worthwhile for the time you save in the air.

A little taste of luxury.

Each airliner carries 55 people. Every one of them will have a seat with a window and an aisle (the best of both worlds), tonnes of leg room and all the mod-cons that come with Business Class travel. You’ll be flying twice as high as a regular aircraft (around 60,000 feet) so the turbulence is less too. Goodbye spilt wine. It’s also the closest you may get to space travel, unless you’ve already put up the£250k for a Virgin Galactic flight.

The environmental factor.

Boom doesn’t sell this as a more sustainable way to travel. It’s actually very open about this, “Fuel efficiency and operating costs go hand in hand…We are relentlessly innovating toward lower fares—which will mean further reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.” Fair enough. For us, less time in the air means less pollutants. Which can only be a good thing.
